SFGC ProGuides Gary Roybal, Rocky Martinez, assistant Happy and I set our remote camp in our favorite site to host the "Harvards", a small group of 2020 graduates on the first leg of their summer adventure out west.
As all the worlds students graduating the year of the COVID 19 pandemic now know, their experience is unique in modern times.
Our fly fishing immersion adventure entails multiple days afield in our remote camp complete with all meals and ProGuide services, just like our big game hunts coming soon in the fall. I saw this as a prime chance to formulate and practice our new operations protocols taking CDC and New Mexico DOH guidelines for this new COVID 19 safe business world into account and use.
The Harvards quarantined in their Santa Fe home for 2 weeks after arriving New Mexico and now chomping at the bit to get out into the wilds, geared up as our personal equipment and supplies list suggested including face masks and hand sanitizer and arrived camp midday as directed. Camp check-in followed by a solid orientation on new camp engagement Coronovirus protocols with time to start our basic fly fishing lessons under giant ponderosa pines shading camp.
A short "show and tell" on fly fishing history, theory, equipment rods, reels, lines, flies, important knots and casting practice, then right onto the wild trout stream targeting rainbows, German browns, brookies and cutbows catching the evening hatch.
This is my favorite time of the year in the New Mexico high country with dry cool temps, clear streams, swarms of hatching mayflies, strikes on the surface fishing dry flies and setting the hook on another wild trout.
For the next several days the Harvards ventured from our base camp by UTV pushing back into wilder country and perfecting fly fishing skills with the SFGC ProGuides leading their way. Lodging and dining in their private camp complete with awesome views, eating SFGC home-cooked famous field foods and sleeping tight and snug in Kodiak canvas wall tents. Hump day culminated in packing back into one of the most remote canyons for an evening under the starts in team survival bivouacs, fishing the evening hatch, a sound sleep, fishing the daybreak rise followed by b-fast burritos in the AM delivered hot packed in by the SFGC ProGuides.
